Platelet rich plasma can be used to treat neck pain. In this case, the PRP is injected into the supraspinous ligaments, the intertransverse ligaments and into the joint capsule around the facet joints. Additionally, usually the attachments of the muscle tendons along the base of the skull will be treated as well. Pain from these connective tissue structures in the neck can refer out the shoulder and into the arm, often missleading the patient into believing they have a problem in the shoulder or arm. The tendon attachments along the base of the skull will sometimes refer up over the head and often present as headaches in the front of the head or in the temples. PRP of the neck usually requires from 2 to 6 treatments, with an average of 3 treatments. These treatments are performed at 6 to 8 week intervals.
